Established in 2001, the .NAME generic domain extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to obtain john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level domain names remained operational.
